McCall MacBain Scholarship — McGill University
Canada's Rhodes Scholarship: what it covers, how to apply, deadlines, and interview process.
McCall MacBain Scholarship — McGill University#
This is the big one. The McCall MacBain Scholarship is Canada's first comprehensive graduate scholarship. People call it "Canada's Rhodes Scholarship" — and that comparison is accurate. It is prestigious, it is fully funded, and it is open to students from every country in the world.
What It Is#
The McCall MacBain Scholarship funds Master's and professional degree programs at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec. McGill is one of Canada's top universities — consistently ranked among the best in the world. And yes, even though Montreal is in the French-speaking province of Quebec, McGill is an English-language university. You do not need to speak French to study there.
What It Covers#
This scholarship covers everything:
- Full tuition and fees
- A living stipend (enough to cover rent, food, and daily expenses in Montreal)
- A mentorship program pairing you with leaders in your field
- Leadership development programming throughout your degree
- Access to a community of McCall MacBain Scholars
You are not just getting money. You are getting a full support system.
Who Can Apply#
This is what makes it special — any nationality can apply. You do not need to be from a specific country or region. If you have a strong academic record, leadership experience, and a clear vision for what you want to do with your degree, you are eligible.
The scholarship is for Master's and professional programs at McGill. That includes programs in law, medicine, MBA, public policy, engineering, sciences, arts, and more.
How to Apply — Read This Carefully#
Here is the most important thing you need to understand: you apply for the scholarship FIRST, before you apply to McGill for admission. Many students get this wrong. Do not be one of them.
Step-by-Step Process#
Step 1: Go to the application portal
The application opens on June 1, 2026 at mccallmacbainscholars.org. Bookmark that website right now.
Step 2: Complete the online application form
Fill out every section carefully. Take your time. Do not rush this.
Step 3: Upload your CV / Resume
This needs to be strong. Include your education, work experience, leadership roles, community involvement, awards, and anything that shows who you are beyond grades. Start working on your CV now — do not wait until June.
Step 4: Provide your transcripts
Upload your academic transcripts from your undergraduate degree (and any other degrees you hold).
Step 5: Submit two reference letters
You need exactly two:
- One academic reference — a professor or academic supervisor who can speak to your intellectual ability
- One character / leadership reference — someone who knows your leadership, community work, or character outside of academics
Choose your referees carefully. Give them plenty of time. Brief them on what the scholarship values.
Step 6: University endorsement (if applicable)
If you are a current student or recent graduate, you must get an endorsement from your university before submitting your application. Check the website for details on how this works for your institution.
Deadlines#
- International applicants: around August 20, 2026
- Canadian and US applicants: around September 24, 2026
These dates can shift slightly each year. Check the official website for the exact dates.
What Happens After You Apply#
If you make it through the initial review, you become a finalist — roughly 85 people are selected as finalists each year. As a finalist, you then apply to your chosen McGill program by December.
Finalists are invited to Montreal for in-person interviews. And here is the good news — the scholarship covers your travel costs to get to the interview. They fly you in.
What They Look For#
The selection committee evaluates you on:
- Academic excellence — strong grades and intellectual curiosity
- Character — integrity, resilience, empathy
- Leadership — real impact, not just titles
- Community engagement — meaningful involvement in your community
- Entrepreneurial spirit — initiative, creativity, willingness to take action
They do not want a perfect robot. They want a real person who has made a real difference and has a clear plan for the future.
My Tips#
- Start your CV now. Do not wait until the application opens. Build it, refine it, get feedback on it.
- Choose your referees carefully. Pick people who truly know you and can write detailed, specific letters. A generic letter from a famous person is worse than a detailed letter from someone who knows your work.
- Be specific about why McGill. Research your program. Know the professors. Know the city. Show them you have thought deeply about this.
- Be specific about what you will do with the degree. They want to invest in people who will use their education to make an impact. What is your plan?
- Do not wait until the last week. Start early. Review your application multiple times. Ask someone you trust to read it before you submit.
This scholarship changes lives. Take it seriously.
