Your Backup Plan — Funding Alternatives
MPOWER loans, University of the People, community colleges, and other options if you don't get full funding.
Your Backup Plan — Funding Alternatives#
Let me be honest with you. Not everyone gets a full scholarship on the first try. The spots are limited, and the competition is real.
But that does NOT mean your dream of studying in America is over. You still have options — good ones. Let me show you what they are.
Option 1: MPOWER Financing#
This is one of the best options for international students, and most people do not even know about it.
MPOWER Financing offers student loans specifically for international students studying in the US and Canada. Here is what makes it special:
- No cosigner required — you do not need someone in the US to sign for you
- No collateral — you do not need to put up property or assets
- Available at 400+ schools in the US and Canada
- Can cover your full tuition and living costs
Fill out the application to see if you are eligible. It does not cost anything to check, and it takes just a few minutes. This could be the difference between going to school in America and staying home.
Option 2: Partial Scholarship + Loan#
Some schools may not give you a full scholarship, but they might offer partial aid — maybe they cover 50% or 70% of your costs.
In that case, you can combine your partial scholarship with an MPOWER loan to cover the gap. This is a very common strategy and it works well.
Do not reject a partial scholarship just because it is not full funding. Do the math first. You might be closer to making it work than you think.
Option 3: University of the People#
If you cannot get into a school with full funding right now, consider University of the People.
UoPeople is an accredited, tuition-free online university based in the US. You can earn a real American degree for almost nothing — you only pay small exam fees.
They offer degrees in:
- Business Administration
- Computer Science
- Health Science
- Education
This is a legitimate option. It is accredited. Employers recognize it. And it allows you to get a US degree without leaving your country or spending tens of thousands of dollars.
Option 4: Start at a Community College#
Here is a strategy that many successful international students use:
- Start at a community college in the US (much cheaper — often $5,000-$10,000 per year)
- Study hard for 1-2 years and get excellent grades
- Transfer to a 4-year university with a scholarship
Some community colleges even offer scholarships for international students. And because community college is cheaper, you need less financial aid to make it work.
This path takes longer, but it gets you to the same destination. Many students at top universities started at community colleges.
Option 5: Apply Again Next Year#
If you do not get in this cycle, that is not the end. Many successful transfer students applied more than once before getting accepted.
Use the next year to:
- Improve your GPA — take challenging courses and get strong grades
- Build your extracurriculars — join clubs, take leadership roles, do community service
- Strengthen your essays — you now have more experience and more to write about
- Get better recommendation letters — build deeper relationships with your professors
- Research more schools — expand your list and find schools that are the best fit
Every year you wait, you become a stronger applicant — if you use that time wisely.
Option 6: Get Personalized Help#
Sometimes you need someone who has been through it to look at your specific situation and give you real advice.
I offer 1-on-1 calls where we spend 60 minutes going over your applications, scholarships, essays, and strategy. I will tell you exactly what I think and what you should do.
Do Not Give Up#
I want to leave you with this: the fact that you are reading this course right now puts you ahead of most people. Most international students do not even know these opportunities exist. You do.
The path might not be a straight line. You might need to try more than once. You might need to combine strategies. But if you keep going, keep improving, and keep applying — you will find a way.
I believe in you. Now go make it happen.
