Caltech: Complete Guide for International Students (2026) — Full Scholarship, SAT, CSS, Deadlines
Everything international students need to know about Caltech — full scholarships, SAT requirements, CSS Profile, acceptance rate, transfer options, English requirements, deadlines, and step-by-step application guide.

If you are an international student who loves science, math, or engineering and wants a school that will pay for everything — tuition, housing, food, books, personal expenses — Caltech deserves a spot at the top of your list.
The California Institute of Technology is one of the most prestigious research universities on the planet. It is tiny — only about 1,000 undergraduates — but it produces more Nobel laureates per capita than any other university. And they meet 100% of demonstrated financial need for international students. All need-based. Real money.
I came to America from South Africa on a full scholarship, and schools like Caltech are exactly the kind of opportunity I wish I had known about earlier. Let me break down everything you need to know.

What Makes Caltech Special#
1. 100% of Need Met#
This is the big one. Caltech guarantees to cover 100% of your demonstrated financial need. If your family cannot afford to pay, Caltech bridges the gap with scholarships and grants.
If your family earns under $100,000 per year, you can expect aid that covers tuition, housing, food, and fees. For families earning far less, the package can cover essentially everything. The average scholarship package is over $60,000 per year — and the total cost of attendance is over $80,000/year.
According to Caltech's data, approximately 60% of students receive institutional financial aid. This is real money going to real students.
2. The Best STEM Education in the World#
Caltech is not a typical university. It is a pure STEM institution. Every student — regardless of major — must complete a rigorous core curriculum in mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology. If you want to be surrounded by people who are genuinely passionate about science and engineering, there is no better place.
Caltech is consistently ranked among the top 5 universities in the world. It has produced 46 Nobel laureates and operates NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). The research opportunities are unmatched for undergraduates.
3. Incredibly Small — In the Best Way#
With only about 1,000 undergraduates and a 3:1 student-to-faculty ratio, Caltech offers an experience you cannot find at larger research universities. Your professors will know your name. You will do real research starting in your first year. You will get recommendation letters that are deeply personal and specific.
4. The House System#
Caltech has a residential house system — similar to what you see at Hogwarts, but real. Every student belongs to one of eight houses, and these become your family. The house system builds community in a way that is rare at American universities.
5. The Honor Code#
Caltech operates under an honor code that gives students extraordinary trust and freedom. Take-home exams are common. Lab access is 24/7. This culture of trust and integrity is central to the Caltech experience.
6. California Location#
Pasadena is just northeast of Los Angeles. You get year-round sunshine, access to one of the world's most dynamic cities for tech, entertainment, and career opportunities, and you are minutes from the mountains and beaches.
Financial Aid Breakdown#
If you are admitted with full financial need, here is what a typical Caltech aid package covers:
| Cost | Amount/Year | Covered? |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition | ~$60,000 | Yes — fully covered |
| Room and Board | ~$20,000 | Yes — fully covered |
| Books and Supplies | ~$1,500 | Yes — covered |
| Personal Expenses | ~$2,500 | Yes — covered |
| Travel | Varies | May be partially covered |
| Total Cost | ~$84,000/year | $0 out of pocket with full aid |
Caltech's financial aid is need-based. They look at what your family can afford and cover the rest. If your family can afford $0, you pay $0. Graduates also earn over $100,000 per year on average, making a Caltech degree one of the highest-return investments in higher education.
SAT/ACT — Required#
Caltech requires SAT or ACT scores for all applicants. The testing requirement was reinstated in April 2024 for fall 2025 entry onward.
Caltech uses a unique "bucket" scoring system when reviewing test scores:
- Bucket A: SAT 780-800 per section / ACT 35-36
- Bucket B: SAT 750-770 per section / ACT 33-34
- Scores that fall into Bucket A or B are shown to reviewers as a bucket label, not an exact number
- Scores below those thresholds are shown as exact numbers
What this means for you as an international student:
- There is no minimum score required — submit your scores regardless
- Caltech evaluates individual section scores, not just the composite
- Strong math and science section scores matter more than your overall composite
- If you are in a location where testing access is difficult, contact Caltech's admissions office — but plan to take the SAT or ACT
English Proficiency Requirements#
If English is not your first language, you must submit one of these:
| Test | Minimum Score |
|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT | 100 |
| IELTS | 7.0 |
| Duolingo English Test | 120 |
These are minimums — aim higher if possible. If you attended an English-medium school for several years, you may be able to request a waiver. Contact Caltech's admissions office to ask.
CSS Profile and Financial Aid Application#
To get financial aid, you must complete financial aid forms. Here is what Caltech requires:
CSS Profile#
Go to cssprofile.collegeboard.org and complete the form.
What you need:
- Parents' income information and tax returns (or equivalent)
- Bank statements
- Information about property, assets, and family expenses
IDOC (Institutional Documentation Service)#
After submitting the CSS Profile, Caltech requires you to upload supporting documents through the College Board's IDOC system. This includes tax returns, W-2s, or their international equivalents.
CSS fee waivers are available for students with financial need. Check this list: Schools with CSS Fee Waivers

How to Apply — Step by Step#
Step 1: Submit Your Application#
Apply through the Common App or Coalition App.
What you need:
- Common App or Coalition App personal essay
- Caltech supplemental essays (3 short-answer questions focused on STEM interests and curiosity)
- High school transcripts (translated to English if needed)
- 2 teacher recommendations (at least 1 from a math or science teacher) + 1 counselor recommendation
- English proficiency scores (TOEFL/IELTS/Duolingo)
- SAT or ACT scores (required)
Application fee: $75 — fee waivers available through the Common App or Coalition App if you have financial need.
Step 2: Submit Financial Aid Forms#
Submit the CSS Profile and IDOC documents. Check your application portal regularly for any additional requests from the financial aid office.
Step 3: Wait for Your Decision#
Caltech will review your application and financial situation together (need-aware). If admitted, your acceptance letter will come with a complete financial aid package.
Deadlines#
| Round | Application Deadline | Financial Aid Deadline | Decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Restrictive Early Action | November 1 | November 1 | Mid-December |
| Regular Decision | January 3 | January 3 | Mid-March |
| Transfer | February 15 | February 15 | Mid-May |
Pro tip: If Caltech is a top choice, consider Restrictive Early Action (REA). REA is non-binding — if admitted, you are NOT required to attend and you can still compare financial aid offers from other schools. Applying REA shows strong interest and gives you an earlier decision. Note: Caltech's REA restricts you from applying Early Action or Early Decision to other private schools (with some exceptions for public universities).
Need-Aware: What It Means for You#
Caltech is need-aware for international students. This means your financial need IS considered during admissions. If two equally strong applicants apply and one needs full funding while the other can pay, the one needing less aid may have a slight advantage.
But do not let this stop you from applying. Caltech admits international students who need full funding every year. About 10% of their student body is international. If you are a strong applicant — especially in math and science — apply regardless of how much aid you need.
Transfer Students#
Caltech accepts transfer students, but does NOT guarantee to meet 100% of demonstrated financial need for international transfer students. If you are a transfer student looking for schools that cover full need, check my course: Full Scholarships for International Transfer Students
Transfer admission to Caltech is also extraordinarily competitive:
- Acceptance rate: ~2%
- Very few spots available each year (sometimes fewer than 10 total)
- Strong math and science coursework is essential
- At least 1 year of college coursework required
- College transcripts
- Transfer essays
- Professor recommendations
- CSS Profile + IDOC for financial aid
- Deadline: February 15
If you are considering transferring to a top STEM school, Caltech is worth applying to, but you must also apply to other schools.
What Caltech Looks For#
Caltech is different from most universities. Here is what matters most:
- Math and science excellence — This is non-negotiable. Caltech wants students who have excelled in the most challenging math and science courses available to them (AP, IB, A-Levels). Strong performance in calculus, physics, and chemistry is expected.
- Genuine curiosity and passion for STEM — Do you read science papers for fun? Have you done independent experiments? Do you solve math problems because you enjoy it? Caltech wants students who are obsessed with understanding how the world works.
- Research or projects — Any research experience, science olympiad participation, independent projects, or competitions (like the International Math Olympiad, Physics Olympiad, or similar) will strengthen your application significantly.
- Collaboration and community — Caltech's house system and honor code depend on students who work well with others. Show that you contribute to the people around you.
- Authenticity — Be yourself. With only ~1,000 undergrads, Caltech reads every application with extreme care. They know when you are genuine vs. performing.

Bottom Line#
Caltech is one of the most extraordinary opportunities in America for international students who love STEM and need full financial aid. 100% of need met, the smallest and most intimate classes you will find at any top research university, a 3:1 student-to-faculty ratio, access to NASA's JPL, and an honor code culture that treats you like an adult. SAT or ACT scores are required, but there is no minimum — and Caltech's unique bucket system means reviewers focus on score ranges rather than exact numbers.
If you have outstanding math and science preparation, genuine passion for understanding the world, and the determination to push through one of the toughest application processes in higher education — apply. It could change your life.
