Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program — McGill
Full funding for Sub-Saharan African students: mandatory info sessions, the application process, and tips.
Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program — McGill University#
If you are from Sub-Saharan Africa and you want to pursue a fully funded Master's degree at one of the best universities in Canada, this is your opportunity. The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at McGill is designed specifically for talented African students who have the academics but not the finances.
What It Is#
The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program is a global initiative that partners with top universities around the world to provide full scholarships to young people from Africa. McGill University in Montreal is one of those partner institutions.
This is not a small scholarship. This is everything paid for.
What It Covers#
- Full tuition and fees
- Living expenses
- Return travel to and from Canada
- Books and supplies
- Health insurance
- Career support and professional development
You are fully taken care of. The goal is for you to focus 100% on your studies and your growth — not on how you will pay your bills.
Who Can Apply#
To be eligible, you must:
- Be from Sub-Saharan Africa (this includes refugees from Sub-Saharan Africa)
- Demonstrate financial need — this scholarship is for students who genuinely cannot afford to study abroad without support
- Have strong academic performance
- Show a commitment to giving back to your community and to Africa
That last point matters a lot. They are investing in you because they believe you will use your education to create change on the continent. Your application needs to show that clearly.
How to Apply — Follow This Process Exactly#
This is where many students make mistakes. The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at McGill has a very specific application process. If you skip a step, you are out. Read this carefully.
Step 1: Confirm Your Eligibility#
Go to the McGill Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program website and review the eligibility criteria. Make sure you qualify before you invest time in the application.
Step 2: Register for and Attend a MANDATORY Information Session#
This is critical. You must attend an information session. This is the only way to receive the link to the scholarship application form. If you do not attend the session, you cannot apply. Period.
Information sessions are typically held online, so you can attend from anywhere. But spaces may be limited, so register as early as possible.
Step 3: Complete and Submit the Scholarship Application#
After attending the information session, you will receive a link to the application form. Complete it carefully and submit it before the deadline.
The application typically opens in August with a deadline in late August or October — check the official McGill Mastercard Foundation page each year for the exact dates.
Step 4: Pre-Screening#
If your application passes the initial screening, you will receive a fee waiver and instructions to apply for admission to McGill University.
Step 5: Apply to McGill (Only When Invited)#
This is the part most students get wrong. Do NOT apply directly to McGill before being invited through the scholarship. Do not contact professors. Do not submit a regular application. Only students who receive the fee waiver through the Mastercard Foundation application process will be considered for the scholarship.
If you apply on your own outside of this process, it does not count. Wait for the invitation.
Step 6: Selection and Notification#
After you submit your McGill application through the proper channel, the selection committee reviews everything — your scholarship application, your academic record, your admission application — and makes final decisions.
What They Look For#
The selection committee evaluates:
- Academic merit — you need strong grades, but you do not need to be the top student in your country. They look at your full academic picture.
- Financial need — this must be genuine and well-documented. Be honest and clear about your family's financial situation.
- Leadership potential — what have you done in your school, community, or workplace that shows you can lead?
- Commitment to Africa's transformation — what is your vision? How will you use your degree to make a difference when you return?
My Tips#
- Attend the information session as early as possible. Do not wait for the last session. Register early, attend early, and get your application link early. This gives you more time to prepare a strong application.
- Be authentic about your story. Do not try to sound like someone else. Tell your real story — where you come from, what you have faced, what drives you. The committee reads hundreds of applications. Authenticity stands out.
- Be specific about your vision for Africa. "I want to help my community" is not enough. What exactly will you do? What problem will you solve? How does this specific Master's program at McGill help you do that?
- Document your financial need clearly. Gather the documents you need early. If your family does not have formal income records, explain your situation honestly and provide whatever evidence you can.
- Do NOT skip any steps. I cannot say this enough. Attend the session. Get the link. Apply through the proper channel. Follow every instruction exactly as they give it to you.
Beyond the Scholarship#
The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program is more than money. You also get:
- Mentorship from professionals and academics
- Career development support to help you transition from student to professional
- A network of Mastercard Foundation Scholars across Africa and around the world
This network is powerful. Scholars who came before you are now leaders in government, business, healthcare, technology, and more across Africa. You become part of that community.
This scholarship exists because someone believes in African talent. Prove them right.
