3 Steps to Get Full Scholarships in America (For Poor Students)
Learn the 3-step system to get full scholarships in America even if you're from a poor family. Includes 60+ schools, Common App tips, and CSS Profile.

Coming from a poor family doesn't mean your dream of studying in America is impossible. I've helped thousands of international students secure full scholarships, and today I'm sharing the exact 3-step system that works — even if you don't have any money.
The third step I'll share is the most crucial one that many students miss, so make sure you read through to the end.
Step 1: Find Schools That Give Full Scholarships#
The first thing you need to do is identify schools that actually offer full scholarships to international students for their bachelor's degrees. This isn't as rare as you might think.
Here's the good news: I've already found over 60 schools that do this.
These aren't just small, unknown colleges either. Many prestigious institutions offer need-based aid that can cover 100% of your costs, including tuition, room, board, and even personal expenses.
If you want to see specific lists of these schools, check out my comprehensive guides on 100% scholarships for international students in the USA and 20+ schools offering full scholarships with January deadlines.
Step 2: Apply to At Least 20 Schools Using Common App#
Once you have your list of schools, you need to cast a wide net. Apply to at least 20 of these schools to maximize your chances of getting accepted with a full scholarship.
Why the Common App is Your Best Friend#
The Common App is an amazing platform that allows you to apply to multiple schools at the same time. Instead of filling out 20 separate applications, you complete one application that goes to all your chosen schools.
The best part? You can get a fee waiver, meaning you don't need to pay any application fees.
What You'll Need for Your Applications#
Here's what's required for your Common App:
- Personal essay — This is your chance to tell your story
- Counselor letter of recommendation — Can be from a principal or someone in your high school's administrative office
- Teacher letters of recommendation — From your high school teachers
Important tip: The letters of recommendation are often the most difficult part for international students. But here's something most people don't know — you can email any school requesting a waiver for letters of recommendation if you're unable to get them.

Step 3: Fill Out the CSS Profile (Most Important!)#
This is the step that determines whether you'll actually receive that full scholarship. The CSS Profile is how schools determine how much money you need to attend their institution.
In other words, this is exactly how schools decide whether to give you a full scholarship or not.
Why the CSS Profile Matters So Much#
The CSS Profile provides schools with a detailed financial picture of your family's situation. When schools see that you truly cannot afford to pay, they're much more likely to offer you a full need-based scholarship.
Key point: Don't skip this step. Many students get accepted to schools but miss out on financial aid because they didn't complete the CSS Profile.
Timeline and Strategy#
| Step | When to Complete | Time Required |
|---|---|---|
| Find schools | 6-8 months before deadlines | 1-2 weeks |
| Common App | 3-4 months before deadlines | 1-2 months |
| CSS Profile | After submitting applications | 1-2 weeks |
Common Mistakes to Avoid#
- Not applying to enough schools — 20 is the minimum I recommend
- Skipping the CSS Profile — This determines your financial aid
- Not requesting recommendation waivers — Schools are often flexible about this
- Applying only to "famous" schools — Some lesser-known schools offer better aid

The Reality Check#
Let me be honest with you — this process isn't easy. It requires dedication, hard work, and persistence. But I've seen students from the poorest families secure full scholarships to top American universities using exactly this system.
The key is to start early, stay organized, and don't give up if you face obstacles along the way.
Remember: Your financial situation doesn't define your potential. These schools want talented international students, and they're willing to pay for them.
