Best College Major for International Students: Computer Science

If you're an international student trying to decide on a college major, I'm about to save you years of struggle and uncertainty. As someone who came to America from South Africa in 2013 and learned this lesson the hard way, I can tell you definitively: computer science is the best major for international students.

I got my associate's degree in mathematics at community college, transferred for a bachelor's in economics, and later earned my master's in computer science. That journey taught me exactly why computer science should be your first choice — not your backup plan.

Why Computer Science Is Your Best Bet#

There are three compelling reasons why computer science stands above every other major for international students. These aren't theoretical advantages — they're practical realities that will directly impact your ability to stay and work in America.

1. Companies Actually Want to Sponsor You#

Here's the brutal truth: most companies will eliminate you from consideration simply because you're not a US citizen or permanent resident. They don't want to deal with visa sponsorship when they can hire Americans who don't need it.

But computer science is different. Over the last 20-30 years, there's been such high demand for software engineers and data scientists that companies have become much more flexible about who they hire. If you want to understand just how tough the job search is for international students, computer science is your best weapon against that challenge. The demand is so high and supply so low that companies have figured out it's in their best interest to sponsor international students.

When I graduated with my economics degree, I watched this play out in real time. Almost all my classmates who majored in computer science had job offers by graduation. They knew where they were going. Meanwhile, I didn't. Most other international students who didn't major in computer science were in the same boat — uncertain and stressed about finding work.

The reason was simple: companies could easily find Americans to do economics work, so why sponsor an international student? But they couldn't find enough qualified software engineers, so they were willing to sponsor.

2. You Get 36 Months to Work (Not Just 12)#

This advantage is huge and often overlooked. Regular OPT (Optional Practical Training) allows you to work in America for 12 months after graduation. But computer science is a STEM field, which means you get an additional 24-month extension.

Total time you can work: 36 months (3 full years). I break down the full details in my complete OPT guide for international students.

Why does this matter? Because you only have 90 days of unemployment allowed during OPT. If you're unemployed longer than that, you're in violation and could lose your work authorization entirely.

With three years instead of one, you have:

  • More time to find the right job
  • Multiple chances to apply for H1B visas (you can try three times instead of just once)
  • Reduced pressure during your job search
  • Better negotiating position with employers

3. The Money Is Significantly Better#

Let's talk numbers. When I was graduating with my economics degree, I was looking at job offers around $50,000. Most of my non-computer science classmates were getting offers between $45,000-$60,000. Occasionally, someone would get $70,000, and we'd all wonder how they managed that.

Meanwhile, computer science graduates were making $80,000 minimum. It was rare to find a computer science graduate making less than $80,000. Today, most computer science graduates are making six figures on their first job.

Major TypeTypical Starting Salary
Non-STEM degrees$45,000 - $60,000
Economics/Business$50,000 - $70,000
Computer Science$80,000+ (often $100,000+)

If you want to maximize your earning potential in America, computer science is the clearest path there.

What About Other Interests?#

I know what you're thinking: "But William, what if I'm interested in business or finance?"

My advice: double major. Get that computer science degree alongside whatever else interests you. I actually compare both fields in detail in my economics vs computer science breakdown. The computer science degree will open doors and provide the visa sponsorship opportunities you need. Once you're established in America, you can always pivot or combine your interests.

Remember, this isn't just about what you want to study — it's about what gives you the best chance of building a life in America as an international student.

The Reality Check#

I've made other videos comparing different majors, but those are typically geared toward American students who don't face visa challenges. As an international student, your priorities are different:

  1. Getting hired (visa sponsorship)
  2. Staying legally (extended work authorization)
  3. Earning well (justifying the investment)

Computer science delivers on all three fronts better than any other major.

My Bottom Line Advice#

If I could go back to 2013 and advise my younger self, I'd say: "Skip the economics degree. Go straight to computer science." It would have saved me years of uncertainty and stress about finding work as an international student.

The three advantages — sponsorship opportunities, extended work authorization, and higher salaries — make computer science the strategic choice for international students who want to build careers in America.

Don't make the same mistake I did. Choose the major that sets you up for success from day one. And if cost is a concern, look into how to study for free in the USA so you can afford to focus on the right degree.
