How to Actually Get Into Schools That Give Full Scholarships (2026 Strategy)
Full-scholarship schools are competitive, but applying Early Decision can double your acceptance rate. Here's the strategy with real numbers from Washington and Lee, Williams, and Amherst.

I've been sharing schools that give full scholarships to international students, and the number one comment I get is: "These schools are too competitive to get into."
You're not wrong. Many of these schools have acceptance rates under 20%. But that doesn't mean you can't get in — you just need the right strategy.
Here are two strategies that can dramatically improve your chances.
Strategy 1: Apply Early Decision#
This is the single most powerful move you can make. Early Decision (ED) means you apply early and commit to attending that school if accepted. In return, schools reward you with significantly higher acceptance rates.
Look at the numbers:
| School | Regular Decision | Early Decision | Increase |
|---|---|---|---|
| Washington and Lee University | 14–17% | 34–40% | ~2.5x higher |
| Williams College | ~10% | ~30% | ~3x higher |
| Amherst College | ~9% | ~25% | ~2.8x higher |
These aren't small differences — Early Decision can double or even triple your chances of getting in.
How Early Decision Works#
- You apply to one school as your Early Decision choice (usually by November 1 or 15)
- You're telling that school: "This is my #1 choice — if you accept me, I'm coming"
- If accepted, you withdraw all other applications
- If rejected or deferred, you're free to apply to other schools Regular Decision
Important Notes About ED and Financial Aid#
- Schools that meet 100% of demonstrated financial need still do so for ED applicants
- You are not locked in if the financial aid package doesn't work — you can appeal or be released from the commitment
- This is why schools like Washington and Lee, Williams, and Amherst are perfect ED targets — they offer full scholarships AND have much higher ED acceptance rates

Strategy 2: Build Strong Extracurricular Activities#
This is something anyone can do, regardless of where you live or how much money you have.
Your extracurricular activities are what you do outside of school. But here's the key: admissions officers don't want to see a long list of random activities. They want to see impact.
What Makes a Strong Extracurricular?#
- Depth over breadth — leading one meaningful project beats joining 10 clubs
- Community impact — did you help people, solve a problem, or create something?
- Initiative — did you start something yourself, or just participate?
- Sustained commitment — doing something for 2–3 years shows dedication
Examples of Impactful Extracurriculars#
- Starting a tutoring program for students in your community
- Creating a social media page or blog that educates others
- Organizing a community event or fundraiser
- Building an app or website that solves a real problem
- Leading a school club and growing its membership
You don't need expensive activities or fancy programs. The most impressive extracurriculars are often the ones where you saw a problem and took action.
The Combined Strategy#
Here's what I recommend:
- Pick your top school — one that offers full scholarships to international students
- Apply Early Decision to that school
- Build 2–3 strong extracurriculars starting now — focus on impact, not quantity
- Apply Regular Decision to 8–12 other schools as backups
- Download my free guides for your specific degree level
This combination — strategic school selection + Early Decision + strong extracurriculars — gives you the best possible shot at a full scholarship.
