Creating a LinkedIn for International Students - My App Idea
I'm considering building an app specifically for international students - a LinkedIn-style platform with job tracking, visa application timers, and community features.

I've been thinking a lot lately about the challenges international students face, and I have an idea that could make a real difference. What if there was a LinkedIn specifically designed for international students? Let me share my thoughts and get your input.
The Problem International Students Face#
After years of helping international students navigate the American education system, I've noticed some consistent pain points. You're dealing with visa applications, trying to find jobs that actually sponsor international students, and constantly wondering how long various processes will take.
I remember when I was applying for my EAD card — I went online trying to determine how long it would take, searching through forums and Reddit threads for real experiences from other students.
My App Concept: A LinkedIn for International Students#
Here's what I'm envisioning for this international student app:
Job Search That Actually Works for You#
The core feature would be a job search platform where international students can find positions that actually sponsor visas. No more applying to hundreds of jobs only to discover they don't sponsor international students.
When you sign into the app, you'd be able to:
- Search specifically for jobs that sponsor international students
- Connect directly with employers who understand visa requirements
- Build your professional network within the international student community
Community Q&A Feature#
You'd have a space to ask questions about international student affairs and get answers from peers who've been through similar experiences. Think of it as a dedicated forum where you can get practical advice from other international students.
Application Processing Tracker#
This is where I think the app could be really valuable. There would be a tracker showing how long certain applications take to be approved. For example:
- EAD card processing times
- OPT application timelines
- Visa renewal processes
- University application responses
This real-time data from the community would help you plan better and reduce anxiety about waiting periods.
Why This App Makes Sense#
Currently, international students are scattered across different platforms:
- LinkedIn (but most jobs don't specify visa sponsorship)
- Reddit forums (helpful but disorganized)
- Various immigration tracking websites (often outdated)
A centralized platform specifically for international students could streamline all of this.
If you're currently applying to universities and looking for scholarships and funding options, imagine having a platform where you could also:
- Track your application status
- Connect with other students at your target schools
- Find internships and jobs that fit your visa status
Additional Features I'm Considering#
I'm still determining what other features should be included, but here are some possibilities:
Academic Support
- Study group formation
- Academic resource sharing
- Mentorship matching
Practical Living Help
- Housing recommendations
- Local community connections
- Cultural adaptation tips
Financial Resources
- Scholarship opportunities specifically for international students
- Information about funding options like MPOWER Financing
- Budget tracking tools
What Do You Think?#
I want to know: Would you use this app?
More importantly, what features do you think would be most valuable? Based on your experience as an international student (or future international student), what tools would actually make your life easier?
Some questions I'm considering:
- Should it focus more on career networking or academic support?
- What information is hardest to find as an international student?
- How important is the application tracking feature compared to job searching?
Making This Happen#
Building an app is a significant undertaking, but I've seen firsthand how much international students struggle with fragmented information and limited networking opportunities.
If you're currently researching universities with full scholarships or looking into tuition-free options, you know how much time you spend jumping between different websites and forums.
This app could centralize everything you need in one place.
Your Input Matters#
I'm genuinely interested in your thoughts. Leave a comment below and tell me:
- Would you download and use this app?
- What's your biggest challenge as an international student?
- What features would be most valuable to you?
- What similar apps or platforms do you currently use?
Your feedback will help determine whether this idea moves forward and what features to prioritize.
